How bitmark makes learning content finally accessible

Education is the most important resource as it is the foundation for health, financial stability, development of any kind. Sadly, not all kids get the chance to access it.

Right now, there are 260 million children and young people worldwide that can't go to school or even read books. That's like 33 times the size of Switzerland! These kids are missing out on a lot of important knowledge.

At the same time the smartphone offers a potential to close our global education gap.

The only problem is: There is just not enough learning content accessible on smartphones.

The process of creating digital learning and making it widely accessible is just too expensive for publishers and other content owners - underlying issue is that e-learning is highly fragmented.

Like as sea full of lonely islands.

Every e-learning platform has their own way to create digital learning content. Today there are thousands of different proprietary data formats in the e-learning market and it’s not possible to exchange, import or export the learning content from one platform to another.

So if a publisher wants to digitized its book, he must do it multiple times for each specific learning platform. Which is too expensive, so the learning content is locked in.

Thomas Gabathuler experienced this high fragmentation as a founder as well and was frustrated by all the locked in learning content. He learned that if you want to make learning accessible it needs one common ground.

He invented a standard format so e-learning becomes connected, shareable and accessible everywhere and called it bitmark

bitmark is the world’s only open-source, content-first standard for digital learning content and serves as a bridge for all the locked in learning content. The bitmark standard is created to enable interoperability in a highly fragmented e-learning world.

bitmark not only empowers the digitization but also the distribution and to make it available to everyone. With bitmark the digitization becomes easy, free and very efficient.

bitmark is like a bridge that brings together all the isolated learning content. With bitmark, you create once and share everywhere. This helps different e-learning platforms work together, making it easier for schools and teachers to pick what they need. And it makes learning content more accessible for students.

Today bitmark is used by teachers, publishing houses, edtech companies, and many others and reaches around 2.2 million learners globally.

To make a bigger difference the bitmark Association works on many projects to make education more accessible. For example, it hosts the Open Taskpool with 24,000 open learning tasks. It also organizes the global bitmark Hackathon where more than hundred participants from all over the world created new learning apps in just 24 hours.

The overall goal of bitmark and the bitmark Association is to create interoperability, make learning content accessible for everyone and help to close the global education gap.
